Overview
Sclerotherapy is an in-office injection treatment for spider veins and selected small varicose veins. A sclerosing solution is injected into the vein, irritating the inner lining and causing the vein to close. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed by the body and fades.
Sclerotherapy is often the preferred treatment for leg spider veins. It may also be used for small surface veins that cause local aching, burning, itching, or cosmetic concern.
What Sclerotherapy is used for
- Spider veins
- Reticular veins
- Small varicose veins
- Cosmetic leg veins
- Selected residual surface veins after medical vein treatment
How the treatment works
A fine needle is used to inject the solution into visible veins. Multiple injections may be performed in one session. Treatment is usually well tolerated and does not require general anesthesia.
What to expect
Treated veins usually fade gradually over several weeks. More than one session is often needed.
Recovery and aftercare
Compression stockings may be recommended. Walking is encouraged. Patients may be advised to avoid hot baths, direct sun exposure on treated areas, and strenuous exercise for a short period.
Insurance and medical necessity
Cosmetic sclerotherapy is generally not covered. If symptoms and ultrasound findings show medical venous disease, treatment of the underlying source may be covered.
