Often covered when medically necessary

Overview

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is used when the target vein is not clearly visible at the skin surface. The physician uses ultrasound to guide the needle into the correct vein and deliver foam medication accurately.

This treatment may be used for refluxing branches, residual veins after ablation, or veins that are too deep or tortuous for direct visual injection.

What Ultrasound-Guided is used for

  • Deeper varicose branches
  • Refluxing tributary veins
  • Residual veins after EVLT, RFA, VenaSeal, or Varithena
  • Recurrent veins after prior treatment
  • Veins visible by ultrasound but not easy to see on the skin

How the treatment works

The target vein is located with ultrasound. A needle is guided into the vein while the physician watches in real time. Foam sclerosant is injected and monitored.

What to expect

Treatment is performed in the office. Patients usually walk afterward.

Recovery and aftercare

Compression is commonly recommended. Mild bruising, soreness, firmness, or discoloration may occur.

Insurance and medical necessity

This treatment may be covered for symptomatic varicose veins when medical necessity is documented. Cosmetic use is generally not covered.
