Overview

Foam sclerotherapy is similar to traditional sclerotherapy, but the medication is prepared as a foam. Foam can displace blood inside the vein and contact more of the vein wall, making it useful for selected larger surface veins.

It may be used cosmetically or medically depending on vein size, symptoms, ultrasound findings, and whether underlying reflux is present.

What Foam is used for

  • Reticular veins
  • Larger spider-vein networks
  • Small varicose veins
  • Selected residual branches after vein closure
  • Veins that may not respond as well to liquid sclerotherapy

How the treatment works

The sclerosing medication is mixed into foam and injected into the target vein. The foam fills the vein, irritates the lining, and helps the vein close.

What to expect

Treatment is performed in the office. Treated veins fade gradually. More than one session may be needed.

Recovery and aftercare

Compression is often recommended. Mild bruising, firmness, tenderness, or temporary discoloration can occur.

Insurance and medical necessity

Coverage depends on whether treatment is cosmetic or medically necessary.
