Overview
Spider veins are small red, blue, or purple surface veins. They are commonly cosmetic, but they may sometimes appear with symptoms or larger vein problems.
Common symptoms
- Web-like clusters of small veins
- Red, blue, or purple coloring
- Usually no pain
- Occasional burning or itching
- May worsen after prolonged standing
Why it happens
Small surface veins enlarge; risk can increase with genetics, pregnancy, hormones, standing, aging, or underlying reflux.

Visual exam; ultrasound if symptoms, bulging veins, or recurrence are present.
Treatment options
Visual sclerotherapy, sclerotherapy, or foam sclerotherapy. Ultrasound evaluation when indicated.
