Overview
An ultrasound vein evaluation is often the starting point for patients with varicose veins, spider veins, leg swelling, heaviness, aching, cramping, itching, or skin changes. The purpose is to look beneath the surface and understand whether the visible vein problem is cosmetic, medical, or both.
Many vein problems are caused by venous reflux, which happens when one-way valves inside the leg veins stop closing properly. When this occurs, blood can flow backward and pool in the leg, increasing pressure and contributing to visible veins or symptoms. Ultrasound helps the care team identify whether reflux is present and which veins are involved.
What Ultrasound is used for
- Varicose veins
- Spider veins with symptoms or recurrence
- Bulging veins
- Leg swelling
- Leg heaviness
- Aching or throbbing legs
- Night cramps
- Tired legs after standing
- Burning or itching near visible veins
- Skin discoloration near the ankle
- Venous stasis dermatitis
- Venous leg ulcers or slow-healing ankle wounds
- Recurrent veins after prior treatment
How the treatment works
A trained ultrasound professional applies gel to the skin and moves a handheld ultrasound probe over the leg. The exam shows vein structure and blood flow. You may be evaluated while standing or in different positions because reflux can be more visible when the veins are under normal standing pressure.
What to expect
The exam is non-invasive and does not require needles, anesthesia, or recovery time. After the scan, the care team reviews the findings and explains whether your symptoms appear cosmetic, medical, or both. If reflux is found, the ultrasound helps guide a treatment plan.
Recovery and aftercare
There is no downtime. You can return to normal activity immediately.
Insurance and medical necessity
Ultrasound vein evaluation is often covered when symptoms such as aching, swelling, heaviness, varicose veins, skin changes, or ulcers support medical necessity. Cosmetic-only spider vein concerns may not qualify for covered diagnostic testing.
